Private chef for Thanksgiving: frequently asked questions
What hosts ask us before booking a chef for the holiday.
How much does a private chef cost for Thanksgiving?
A private chef for Thanksgiving on Chefpost costs $65 to $150 per guest. That is about $390 to $900 for a table of six, $900 to $1,600 for ten, and $1,500 to $3,000 for twenty with an assistant. Groceries are billed at cost on top, and a turkey with sides for ten usually adds $150 to $300. New York and the Hamptons run above these ranges.
How far in advance should I book a Thanksgiving chef?
Three to four weeks for a real choice of chefs; two weeks is workable in most cities. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26, and the most reviewed chefs in Miami and New York are typically booked by the first week of November. Chefpost needs 48 hours' notice on any booking, and Thanksgiving week itself is possible but not guaranteed.
What is included when I hire a private chef for Thanksgiving?
Menu planning around your traditions and dietary needs, grocery shopping, cooking the full dinner in your kitchen, carving and serving family-style or plated, packing and labeling the leftovers, and cleaning the kitchen. The chef fee covers the chef's time; groceries are billed at cost.
Does the chef bring the groceries?
Yes. Your chef shops the day before or that morning and brings everything, including the turkey. If you have a bird already, or a farm order coming, tell the chef when you book and they will plan around it. Groceries are billed at cost, separate from the chef fee.
Can a private chef cook Thanksgiving in an Airbnb or vacation rental?
Yes, and it is one of the most common Thanksgiving bookings in Miami, the Hamptons and Texas lake towns. Tell the chef it is a rental when you book. They bring knives, a roasting setup and any equipment a rental kitchen tends to be missing, and plan a menu that works with one oven and limited counter space.
Do I need a big kitchen or two ovens?
No. One oven is normal. The chef schedules the turkey first and times the sides to finish on the stovetop, in the oven after the bird comes out to rest, or in a warming drawer. For twenty or more guests the chef may stagger the cook or bring a helper.
Is a private chef the same as Thanksgiving catering?
No. Thanksgiving catering is cooked in a commercial kitchen and delivered in trays for you to reheat, plate, serve and clean up. A private chef cooks in your kitchen, serves the meal hot, and cleans. Catering scales better past forty guests; a private chef is the better experience for six to twenty.
Can the chef do a Friendsgiving instead?
Yes. Friendsgiving is usually the Saturday before or the Friday after Thanksgiving and is easier to book than the day itself. Chefs typically cook it family-style or as shareable boards, and can batch a cocktail for the table.
Can the menu handle dietary restrictions?
Yes. Gluten-free stuffing, dairy-free mashed potatoes, a plant-based centerpiece next to the turkey, nut-free pies, kosher-style cooking in your kitchen. Share every restriction at the table when you book so the chef can plan one menu that covers everyone.
Does the chef clean up and pack the leftovers?
Yes. Cleanup is part of every Chefpost booking, and on Thanksgiving that includes the roasting pan. Leftovers are portioned, labeled and put in your fridge before the chef leaves.
Which cities can I book a Thanksgiving chef in?
Miami and South Florida, New York City, Brooklyn, Long Island and the Hamptons, New Jersey, Atlanta, Austin, Houston, Dallas and Boston, with the deepest availability in Miami and New York. See every market on our
locations page.
Can I book the same chef for the rest of the holiday week?
Yes. Many hosts add a meal-prep session for the days their family is in town, or a Friday leftovers brunch. Mention it when you book and the chef can price the week together. See
weekly meal prep.
