Private chefs in Boston: frequently asked questions
What New England hosts ask us most.
How much does a private chef cost in Boston?
In-home dinners in Boston generally run $85 to $200 per guest, set by the menu, the course count and the guest count. A dinner party of about ten typically lands around $1,200 to $2,200. Weekly meal prep runs $300 to $500 per week. Cape Cod and the islands price higher in season. See the
full cost guide.
Can I book a Boston chef online right now?
Not yet. Boston is Chefpost's newest market and we are still onboarding vetted New England chefs, so bookings here go through our concierge rather than the public chef search. Send us the date, the neighborhood and the occasion and a person will come back with chefs, menus and pricing.
Do you cover Cambridge, Brookline and Newton?
Yes. The Boston roster is being built to cover the city and the inner suburbs, including Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Newton, Watertown and Medford, plus MetroWest and the 128 belt. If your town is not listed, ask, because coverage widens as chefs come on.
Can I hire a private chef on Cape Cod, Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons we are opening New England. Summer rentals come with kitchens nobody planned to cook in, and the good restaurants on the Cape and the islands are booked solid from late June. A chef shops the local markets and fish piers, cooks at the house and serves on the deck. July and August weekends go early, so ask well ahead.
What is the difference between a private chef and a personal chef?
A private chef is usually booked for a specific dinner or event, and a personal chef is usually booked for ongoing, everyday cooking like weekly meal prep. The terms overlap and at Chefpost the same vetted chefs do both. See
private chef services and
personal chef services.
Are Chefpost chefs vetted?
Yes. Every chef goes through our vetting process before joining the platform, which includes evaluating professional experience and culinary skills and completing required screening, including background checks. We apply the same process in Boston that we apply in the eighteen markets already running.
Does the chef bring the groceries?
It depends on the service. For dinners and events, the price includes the food. For meal prep, some services use groceries you supply and others include the shopping. The service description says exactly what is included before you book.
Can a Boston chef cook for dietary restrictions?
Yes. Chefs build menus around allergies, gluten-free, dairy-free, plant-based, high-protein and other requirements, or around a plan from your nutritionist. Share allergies and strict requirements when you book so the chef can confirm they can safely accommodate them.
How far ahead should I book?
For a city dinner, a couple of weeks is usually comfortable. For Cape Cod, Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard between late June and Labor Day, book as far ahead as you can, because chef availability on the islands is the constraint, not the menu.
I am a chef in the Boston area. Can I join?
Yes, and we would like to hear from you. We are actively onboarding chefs in Boston, on the Cape and on the islands.
